Lexus has adopted a two-sedan strategy with the new IS moving more toward sport. The 2006 IS offers two engine choices for the rear-wheel-drive version and all-wheel drive is offered for the first time. The new IS has a more aggressive stance than the original and is the second example of styling that Lexus refers to as L-Finesse. The L-Finesse styling which Lexus describes as representing simplicity in design with a look of understated luxury. The 2006 Lexus IS 250 is powered by a 204-horsepower 2.5-liter V6 offered with either a 6-speed manual, 6-speed automatic with paddle shifters or a 6-speed automatic with all-wheel drive. The most powerful IS ever offered is the 306-horsepower IS 350 with a new 3.5-liter V6 and 6-speed automatic with paddle shifters. Standard equipment includes 10-spoke 17-inch wheels, dual polished stainless steel exhaust and automatic climate control. Extremely good aerodynamics and efficient transmissions help the IS provide good estimated fuel economy for a high-performance sedan that weighs 3,435 to 3,651 pounds, although both engines call for 91-octane gasoline. The IS 250 delivers 20 mpg in the city and 29 on the highway with the manual gearbox and 24 and 32 with the automatic. The heavier all-wheel-drive version provides 22 and 28 and the IS 350's economy numbers are 21 and 28 despite its sizzling performance. |
